Checking Out the Top 5 Cards in Lorcana’s Latest Expansion, Azurite Sea

Azurite Sea adds a bunch of exciting cards into constructed formats and presents a fun limited experience. Choosing the top 5 cards in the set for this article was a subjective head-scratcher and so it would be more meaningful to select the best card for specific reasons which would then justify their selection for this list.

So, we will be choosing the best cards for the following reasons:

  1. Constructed play value – The card that is certainly going to see the most constructed play should be part of this list. Barring any meme-worthy event, it is certainly going to be the most remembered card in the set.
  2. Limited play value – There are many enthusiasts of Lorcana limited and limited is hardly defined by super rares and legendaries. The uncommon or common that always gets a draft truly started should make this list.
  3. Expected value – Collectors of Lorcana open product for EV. It is only fitting that the most valuable pull makes this list.
  4. Best Legendary – Like it or not, it’s the Legendaries that really pull audiences to unbox sets of Lorcana. They are usually best for value and likely for play as well. A slot for the best Legendary makes the top cut.
  5. Best Sleeper – Speculators are always excited for the card in the set that doesn’t get the massive price tag due to spoiler hype. The card that could see play but isn’t getting too much buzz should make this list.

And here we go:

Maui – Half Shark

This card does so much it practically takes 2 slots on this list. It is card advantage on a stick with every Challenge in an action-centric deck which then enables you to turn recurred actions into Lore later on. As if that isn’t enough push on the card, it also has Evasive which makes it incredibly tough to deal with. This is a must have for every Ruby deck seeking that card that just puts it over the top.

Markowski – Space Trooper

A hyper efficient cost and a very relevant ability makes Markowski – Space Trooper late in a pack a clear indication to dive into Ruby. It is the quintessential Limited rockstar. It will appear in just about every draft and sealed pool for the Azurite Sea Limited format. Having Evasive makes it a hard answer to the runner up signpost common, Tinker-Bell, Fast Flier which would usher opponents to consider looking into Amethyst. Markowski has better stats and multiple copies should jive perfectly with that pack 1 – pick 1 Maui – Half Shark that you tried to not to react to so elatedly when you pulled it from your pack.

Sail the Azurite Sea

One of the best cards for constructed play in this set is actually a common. The namesake of the set, Sail the Azurite Sea is actually what I think will make big waves in constructed play. It is a highly efficient way to kickstart a clunky hand by dumping a misfit card straight into your Inkwell. The icing on the cake is that it also functions as a cantrip, meaning that you can fast track your inkwell into a relevant character in the same turn.

Note that it is not necessary for you to put a card into your Inkwell for you to draw a card which means that late in the game, when you are tight on resources in your hand, this could still turn into a relevant card for you.

Baymax – Personal Healthcare Companion (Enchanted)

Released at rare, opening this beautiful print of Baymax with a butterfly landing on his finger means you just struck gold. Yes it is the most expensive card in the set at the moment, breaking $150 on TCG Player. Although usually just an enabler in Inventor strategies, the demand for this particular collector piece is surprisingly high, lending to its stable price tag as release hype winds down.

Even as a collector piece, Baymax is not entirely without utility. He has a valuable cost reduction ability if you have an Inventor on board which makes him an efficient play. His defense stat is bonkers for the amount that you pay for him and even if he is ignored, he is poised to keep your more relevant characters healthy with his ability.

Jasmine – Royal Commodore

Probably the most underrated Legendary in the set, Jasmine – Royal Commodore could potentially be a one sided reset button for your deck. At less than $2 a copy, it could become a constructed staple in the future if a non-exerting, defensive strategy becomes a significant part of the meta. The foil version is not that pricey either at just under $6 apiece. Still, this is a reactive card. It’s a good spec that is very low risk.

That wraps up our short snapshot of the Top 5 cards in Azurite Sea. What card are you looking forward to most in Lorcana’s latest set?
